WASHITA COUNTY COURTHOUSE

Cordell, Oklahoma

GH2 was engaged to develop rehabilitation study for the Washita County Courthouse. This iconic courthouse was deemed "The Father of Oklahoma Courthouses" by then Governor George Nigh. The courthouse was designed by Solomon Andrew Layton, who also designed the Oklahoma State Capitol and many other prominent Oklahoma structures. The Courthouse Square was the centerpiece of Cordell's successful National Main Street Awards submission in 1999.

The rehabilitation study included an overall analysis of the existing structure and prioritized recommendations and cost estimates for stabilization and improvements.

GH2 subsequently designed rehabilitation projects at the courthouse including replacement windows and masonry repair. The most recent project includes the complete replacement of the original copper dome. The replacement dome was carefully fabricated off-site to match the original dome construction, transported to the town square, and lifted into place atop the courthouse.
