McClain County Courthouse
Purcell, Oklahoma
GH2 designed the rehabilitation of and addition to the historic McClain County Courthouse in Purcell, Oklahoma originally built in 1928. The building is listed on the Secretary of the Interior's National Register of Historic Places and is an excellent example of early twentieth century courthouse architecture.
The rehabilitation planning included building modifications to comply with life-safety and code restrictions. These included the addition of a new elevator and fire stairway, as well as handicapped accessible equipment and restrooms. These improvements were accomplished while keeping the main public areas intact—including the grand staircase at the center of the courthouse. New energy efficient window units were custom fabricated to match the original design. Where possible, original hardware, millwork, and other materials were preserved and reused throughout the structure. The project included a new addition to the Courthouse to provide much needed space for County Court functions, as well as a new county jail facility. The new addition was carefully located so as not to adversely impact the original historic structure.
